Lesson 2 of 5 in Start Here: How Signal & Science Works
Why this matters
Most marketing tools collapse four different questions into one number. What is true right now? What is the next best move? Did the work happen? Did a business metric change? A single 0 to 100 score hides all four, and hides which link in the chain broke. When a result disappoints, you need to know whether the evidence was thin, the plan was wrong, the work was never done, or the work was done and the metric did not move. Those are four different failures with four different fixes.
- 01
Diagnosis
What is true?
- 02
Plan
What will we do?
- 03
Execution
Did it happen?
- 04
Outcome
What changed?
When to use it
Any time a recommendation surprises you, a task underperforms, or someone asks "so did it work?"
Before you start
You have seen the Marketing Plan page (see What Signal & Science is and is not). No other onboarding is needed.
Do this
- 1Open the Diagnostic page: Open in Signal & Science. Read the cover: "THE STATE OF YOUR MARKETING", the Assembled date, and the business type.
- 2Find one capability marked Observed and one marked Unknown. Read what each actually says. The Unknown is a statement about evidence (the system could not verify enough), not a verdict on your business.
- 3Open the Marketing Plan page and read the "THIS WEEK'S MOVE" hero. That is the plan answering "what is the next best move?" It depends on the diagnosis, but it is a separate decision.
- 4Pick any task and open it. Note its execution state (open, done, or skipped) separately from any result recorded against it. A finished task is not automatically a successful one.
- 5When a completed task is waiting for a result, the "Log a task outcome" panel appears with the prompt "Choose a completed task to review or record its result." Outcomes are recorded deliberately, never assumed from completion.
What you should see
On the Diagnostic page, each area carries a state: Observed (usable evidence found, with a confidence level of high, medium, or low) or Unknown (could not verify enough). The evidence basis describes the whole run, not each claim: a banner above the report says when a run was not a full grounded read, and Diagnosis History labels each run's "Evidence map" as "Grounded read", "Direct scan only", or "Unavailable". On the Plan page, tasks show what was done; results are recorded against each completed task.
How to judge it
Given a statement like "our social presence is weak," you can sort it into evidence (diagnosis), choice (plan), action (execution), or measured change (outcome), and say which one is actually being claimed.
What it does not mean
- A plan change is not proof the diagnosis changed. Plans also change because you decided, because capacity shifted, or because a result came in.
- Completing tasks is not proof the outcome moved. Done is not the same as worked.
- An Unknown is not a zero. Missing evidence is not proof of poor performance.
Try it in Signal & Science
Open the Diagnostic page and find one capability marked Observed and one marked Unknown.
