Lesson 7 of 7 in Build the Right Plan
Why this matters
Measure and Learn only work on what gets recorded. When a plan closes, each completed task either has a result, is still inside its measurement window, or has no proof at all, and the next plan weighs those differently: measured outcomes count as evidence, while unmeasured completion does not. Closing out carefully turns a quarter of work into context the next plan can use, instead of a list of things that were done.
When to use it
When every task is done or skipped, when the plan's window is ending, or before you replace a plan with a new one.
Before you start
- Record results before you close. Once a plan is closed its tasks are locked, and results can no longer be recorded against it.
- The real numbers for manual-source tasks, from your CRM, booking system, or sales records, with the date each number is from.
- Owner or manager access to close the plan.
Do this
- 1Open the "Results needed" tab or the "Log a task outcome" panel ("Choose a completed task to review or record its result.") to see completed tasks.
- 2For a task marked "Task completed. Result still needed.", enter the actual value over the task's window and press "Save result". A mid-window reading is interim, not the result. See Record manual results safely.
- 3For an integration-backed task marked "Task completed. Measurement pending.", let the window run. The app checks automatically and reports the result on the task.
- 4Read "Recorded task results" under "What changed and why". Each shows Expected and Actual with a verdict (Exceeded, Met, Partial, Missed, or Inconclusive). Then look at the TARGETS panel: did the primary target move?
- 5Check the "Marketing Memory" card in the right-hand rail, when it appears, to see what the workspace has learned that will shape the next plan.
- 6Close out with "Mark plan complete" (or "Close out this plan" when every task is done). The plan stays readable, its tasks lock, and its results feed the next plan.
- 7Write down in two or three sentences what the plan taught: what moved, what did not, and what the next plan should repeat, adjust, or stop.
What you should see
Recorded values on manual tasks, final results or pending measurement on integration-backed tasks, verdicts in "Recorded task results", and, after closing, "This plan is finished and locked." with "Build my next plan".
How to judge it
You can say what the plan proved, what it did not prove, and what you would do differently, citing recorded results with their sources and dates rather than impressions. For reading verdicts, see Interpret met, partial, missed, and inconclusive results.
What it does not mean
Done never means worked: a completed task with no result is executed but unmeasured. Recorded task results sit alongside other changes in the same window, which is co-occurrence, not proof of cause. "Missed" is information for the next plan, not a failure grade, and "Inconclusive" means the evidence was not enough to judge.
Try it in Signal & Science
Open the Marketing Plan and use the "Log a task outcome" panel to record the result for one completed task.
