Lesson 4 of 7 in Measure What Happened
- 1Define the measurement window before starting
- 2Choose a metric that matches the task
- 3Connect published URLs or provider identifiers where required
- 4Record manual results safely
- 5Read integration-backed results
- 6Separate task-linked metrics from workspace metrics
- 7Interpret met, partial, missed, and inconclusive results
Why this matters
Not every result can be read by an integration. Manual results (a number you looked up in a provider dashboard, a count from a partner's report, a tally from a spreadsheet) are fully legitimate evidence, but only if they carry the three things that make a result defensible: the value, the source, and the date. You enter the value; the source comes from the task's contract and the date is stamped when you save, so the number must come from that source and cover that window. A number from anywhere else is a rumor. Recorded results are the evidence the next plan learns from.
When to use it
When a completed task's measurement window has produced a real number, and the number comes from somewhere an integration cannot read automatically. Record it on the operator's timing: when the number exists, not when the task finished.
Before you start
- The task is complete and its measurement window has produced a real number (or the window is over and there is nothing to record, which is also a result).
- You have the number from the source named on the task card ("Source"), covering the window named there ("Window").
Do this
- 1Open the Marketing Plan page and find the "Log a task outcome" panel ("Choose a completed task to review or record its result."). It appears while a completed task still needs a result, and the section nav shows "Results needed".
- 2Choose the completed task. You are recording the result of finished work; never log a result for work still in progress.
- 3On the task card, under "Task completed. Result still needed.", click "Add Result", enter the actual value for the metric named on the card, and click "Save result". The form takes one number, so enter only a number that came from the card's source over the card's window.
- 4Wait until the window has closed. The form has no interim option: the app treats the saved value as the result and assigns a verdict from it.
- 5Confirm the task card now shows the recorded value and a save confirmation. If you made a mistake, correct it with "Edit".
- 6If the window produced no usable number, do not enter a placeholder such as zero; the app would judge it as a real result. Leave it open, note why in your review, and fix the measurement for next time. A missing result is information: the measurement failed, not the work.
What you should see
The panel listing completed tasks, and after saving, the recorded value on the task card. When the plan has a change window, the task also appears under "Recorded task results" with its recorded date, verdict, and a "Manual result" source label. Empty states here are real: a client with no recorded results shows none, not invented history.
How to judge it
Every recorded value matches the metric, source, and window named on its task card, and you could show where the number came from if asked. If you cannot, correct it with "Edit" now, not at review time.
What it does not mean
Logging a result is not the same as judging it: the app assigns a verdict from the value and the target, and reading that verdict is its own step (see Interpret met, partial, missed, and inconclusive results). It is not proof the task caused anything (see Separate task-linked metrics from workspace metrics). It is the raw, honest evidence the rest of the loop depends on.
