Lesson 2 of 6 in Set Up a Trustworthy Workspace
Why this matters
Intake quality decides plan quality. The diagnosis is built from your business facts, and the plan is built from the diagnosis. A wrong vertical, a stale website, or a missing audience does not cause an error. It causes something worse: a confident, specific, wrong plan. Ten minutes of accurate context saves weeks of correcting recommendations.
When to use it
During onboarding, after any real business change (new offer, new audience, new location, new website), and whenever a recommendation feels like it was written for a different company.
Before you start
Confirm the workspace switcher shows the right workspace (see Work in the right workspace).
Do this
- 1Open the Workspace page (Open in Signal & Science) and read the Business Profile section. It holds Company, Description, Location, Industry, Target Audience, and Services; check each against the business as it is today.
- 2Open the Marketing Plan page and read the strip that begins "Built from your diagnosis", followed by the diagnosis date and "Business Intake". "Business Intake" is a link: follow it and confirm the inputs match what you just read on Workspace.
- 3Fix anything wrong or stale first, before connecting integrations or adding sources. Corrections here flow downstream into every recommendation. The website and "Business Type" are diagnosis inputs, set under "Business details" on the Diagnostic page; social profiles are corrected there under "Review the full evidence".
- 4Scroll the Plan page to TARGETS. If it reads "No target yet. Set the KPI this plan is driving toward.", click "Set a target" and define the one business outcome this plan exists to move. The target form asks for a metric, a display name, a baseline value, a target value (which must exceed the baseline), start and end dates, optional notes, and whether it is the primary target; the current value comes from the data source. A written description of success belongs in the Planning Focus field "How will we know this worked?". If you cannot name a measurable target yet, say so rather than inventing one.
- 5Optional, and only if true: under Workspace you will see a "Company ticker" section, marked optional and intended for public companies, with an "Add company ticker" button. If you are not a public company, leave it alone. Accurate and sparse beats exhaustive and wrong.
What you should see
The Business Profile reflects the business as it is today. The built-from strip on the Plan page names the diagnosis date and links the intake you just verified. TARGETS shows either your target or the "No target yet" empty state, which is a to-do, not a failure.
How to judge it
You can state the primary business outcome in one sentence, and you know exactly where the profile and intake live so you can update them when the business changes.
What it does not mean
- Filling every optional field does not improve the plan. Accurate, current facts do.
- A target is a commitment, not a wish. Do not set one you will not measure; an unmeasured target adds nothing.
Try it in Signal & Science
Open the Workspace page and correct any inaccurate Business Profile facts before you connect integrations or add sources.
