Course 9 · Lesson 2 of 7

Understand Marketing Memory and decision history

Understand what Marketing Memory and decision memory record, where each entry comes from, and how to read an honest empty state.

Lesson 2 of 7 in Make the System Learn

Why this matters

Every plan cycle produces learning: which tasks landed, which guesses were wrong, what you decided and why. Without a durable record, that learning is lost by Monday and the system re-derives it from scratch. Marketing Memory ("What we've learned about your business that shapes each plan.") is that record: learnings built from measured task outcomes, kept as client-scoped knowledge that gives the next plan more context. Knowing what the system remembers, and what it honestly does not, is how you stay in charge of it.

When to use it

When you want to know what the system already believes about this client, before a plan review or before asking the advisor a big question. Also the first time you open a new client, to see what is already there.

Before you start

An open Marketing Plan for the client. Memory may still be empty: the Marketing Memory card appears only once at least one learning exists, and an empty memory is a valid state early on.

Do this

  1. 1Open the Marketing Plan page and find the "Marketing Memory" card in the column beside the tasks ("What we've learned about your business that shapes each plan.").
  2. 2If the card is not there, memory is empty. Believe it: the system has nothing yet, and you are not behind. It fills as task outcomes are measured.
  3. 3If memory exists, read each entry (the card shows up to three): what was learned and how strongly the system holds it (its confidence label). Entries come from your real measured outcomes, not from assumptions.
  4. 4Open the Command Center and go to the Decisions tab, headed "DECISION MEMORY". Scan past decisions: each shows its date, what was chosen, what was held, and the reason where one was recorded.
  5. 5Connect the dots: a task outcome recorded honestly (see Measure What Happened) becomes a memory, which informs the next recommendation, which becomes a decision you review. That is the Learn step of the operating loop, and you can watch it happen here.
  6. 6If a memory looks wrong (built on a bad measurement or an outdated fact), the remedy is better evidence going forward, not distrust of the mechanism. Fix the next measurement.

What you should see

Either no Marketing Memory card yet (memory is empty), or up to three entries with what was learned and a confidence label. In the Decisions tab: past decisions with their dates, choices, and reasons, or "No decisions recorded yet."

How to judge it

You can name one recorded learning and where it came from, or state honestly that memory is still empty and know what will fill it (measured task outcomes).

What it does not mean

Memory is not a transcript and not a guarantee. It informs recommendations; it does not dictate them. You decide: memory is an input to your judgment, never a replacement for it.

Try it in Signal & Science
