Course 6 · Lesson 2 of 7

Classify sources as My Content or Market Sources

Sort sources into My Content and Market Sources so market claims stay separate from how the system describes your business.

Lesson 2 of 7 in Research and Business Context

Why this matters

The classification decides how the system uses a source. My Content is treated as your business context: the advisor may describe your offers, proof, and voice from it, and Create works from it. Market Sources are outside context to compare against, never your brand voice or your proof. File a competitor's page as My Content and its claims can surface in your plan and drafts as if they were yours. File your own deck as a market source and your real proof is read as someone else's.

When to use it

Every time you add a source (the choice is made in the add dialog, before anything uploads), and in a periodic library review: when onboarding a client, before a plan rebuild, or when an answer quotes the wrong voice.

Before you start

  • At least one source added (see Add files, web pages, and pasted text).
  • Owner or Manager access on the workspace, because a misclassified source is fixed by deleting it and adding it again.
  • A rule for edge cases such as partner co-marketing, agency-written copy you now own, or a competitor ad you saved.

Do this

  1. 1Open Research and find the "Sources" filters on the left: "All sources", "My Content", and "Market Sources", each with a count.
  2. 2Open "My Content" and confirm every item is yours: site pages, plans, offers, decks, customer proof, brand voice guides, past campaigns.
  3. 3Open "Market Sources" and confirm every item is external: competitor pages, public ads, industry reports, articles. In "All sources", these rows also carry a "Market Sources" badge.
  4. 4Apply one test to edge cases: if you would publish it under your own name, it is My Content; if you are studying it, it is a market source. Competitor material is a market source even when you saved or uploaded it yourself.
  5. 5Fix a misclassified source by deleting it and adding it again with the right "Use as Market Sources" setting. The bucket is fixed when a source is added; "Rename" changes only the title.
  6. 6When uploading several files at once, check the classification button on each queued file. It can be switched per file until the upload starts.
  7. 7Only add material you have the right to use.

What you should see

Counts that match what you expect, and filtered lists that contain only their own kind. Empty filters are honest: "No market sources yet" means you have not added any, not that the market has nothing to say. Market Sources you add can also be attached to a tracked competitor on the Competitors page (see Add company and competitor context).

How to judge it

You can say in ten seconds which sources describe your business and which describe the market, and every Market Source is something you would never quote as your own proof.

What it does not mean

  • Classification is not verification. A market source in the right bucket is still someone else's claim.
  • "My Content" means ours, not true. An old brochure is your content and may be out of date; delete it rather than let it describe you.
  • Market Sources are not ignored. They inform comparison, gaps, and openings.

Try it in Signal & Science

Open Research, check each mode for a misclassified source, and re-add any you find with the right choice.
