Meta can crawl your site at month end, fix your robots file this week

Meta's new Commercial Terms take effect October 30 and apply to any site tied to a business account. Shopify shipped two holiday-ready fulfillment features, ChatGPT referral traffic was a tracking bug not a loss, and Google's Universal Cart is live in the US.

Meta's new crawling rights apply from October 30

Meta's updated Commercial Terms take effect on October 30, 2026 and grant Meta the right to crawl pages associated with any business that uses its products, including businesses that only run a Facebook Page or manage ads. Meta revised the terms on October 17 to remove language about training Meta products on that crawled content, but the crawling clause itself remains. Section 7 states that continuing to use Meta products after the notice counts as acceptance.

This hits every operator running Meta ads or managing a Page, not just large advertisers. Spokesperson Andy Stone said on October 16 that the intent is pulling product information for ad and content recommendations, but the written clause is broader than that framing.

The move this week: open your robots.txt and add disallow directives for the two Meta crawler tokens, meta-externalagent and meta-webindexer. Meta's documentation says both respect robots.txt. This takes about fifteen minutes and does not affect your ad account. If you want Meta to crawl your product pages for shopping recommendations but not the rest of the site, scope the disallow to specific paths.

Shopify batch fulfillment lands before Black Friday

Shopify published batch fulfillment on October 16. You can group up to 250 orders by product type or shipping destination, then run them through a three-step default workflow of Pick, Print, and Pack. Each step is customizable, documents can be assigned per step, and you can automatically pull your most recent unfulfilled orders into a batch.

This is for any Shopify merchant doing meaningful order volume, especially lean teams or founders who are personally still pulling pick lists. The labor saving per shipment compounds through Q4.

The move: this week, go to the Orders page, select a representative batch of recent orders, click Create batch, and run one end-to-end. Rename or reorder the steps to match how you actually pack. Thirty to forty minutes of configuration now sets up the workflow you will run every day through December.

Discounted DHL labels on Shopify for Netherlands and Poland

Also published October 16: merchants shipping from the Netherlands or Poland can now buy DHL eCommerce labels directly in Shopify at discounted rates, with no platform fee on top of their Shopify plan. From the Netherlands, labels cover domestic orders to eligible addresses with drop off at a DHL service point or locker. From Poland, labels cover orders to eligible EU addresses with drop off at a DHL locker. Tracking is added automatically and orders are marked fulfilled.

This hits a narrow but specific operator type: Shopify merchants with fulfillment locations in NL or PL. Note the asymmetry, Poland cannot buy domestic PL labels through this, only outbound EU.

The move: open Shopify Shipping settings, confirm your fulfillment location address, and buy one test label on a real order this week. If your per-shipment cost drops versus your current carrier account, switch the default.

Your ChatGPT referral drop is a tracking bug, not an audience loss

Starting around 2pm PT on October 8, GPT-6 stopped adding the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag to links. Graphite's analysis of sites with meaningful AI Assistant traffic showed ChatGPT-attributed sessions in GA4 falling by 22 to 57 percent from October 9. The traffic did not disappear, it was being misclassified as Direct. Adobe's Cedric Huesler said on October 15 that OpenAI confirmed the bug and a fix began rolling out that day, with tagged clicks back to roughly 95 to 100 percent of baseline by 9am PT. The referrer header is still missing on most ChatGPT clicks.

This hits any marketer, agency, or fractional CMO about to walk into a monthly review and explain an AI traffic cliff. Pulling budget away from content aimed at AI answers based on October numbers would be the wrong call.

The move: this week, pull GA4 for October 8 to 15 and look at Direct traffic spikes on pages that previously drew ChatGPT referrals. Add a note in your reporting that treats ChatGPT plus the correlated Direct bump as one source for that window. Do not restate September baselines based on October data.

Google Universal Cart is live in the US

Google launched Universal Cart in the United States on October 15 across Search and the Gemini app. Shoppers can save products from multiple retailers into one cart, get notified on price drops and restocks, and either check out in the cart via Google Pay or get handed off to the merchant's site to complete checkout there. The cart is built on Google's Shopping Graph of 60 billion plus product listings. There is no announced date for international markets yet.

This hits US-based e-commerce merchants listed in Google Merchant Center. If your checkout handoff URL or product feed is misconfigured, you will leak sales to competitors whose carts resolve cleanly during the holiday peak.

The move: this week, open Google Merchant Center, run the diagnostics on your feed, and manually test the handoff flow for your top five SKUs from a Search result into your cart. Fix any item disapprovals or landing URL mismatches before Black Friday traffic hits.

Google pushes inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews

Announced October 15: Google is placing inline links more prominently in AI responses, testing a dedicated section at the top of certain responses with links to official sites, expanding Preferred Sources carousels to more locations and languages, testing creator and publisher names on AI Mode video results, and redesigning the end-of-response Dive Deeper section. Google said Preferred Sources usage has grown more than 7x since the start of the year, without giving an absolute number. Search Console's AI report still shows impressions only, not clicks.

This hits content-driven sites, publishers, and brands that already surface in AI Mode or AI Overviews. More prominent placement rewards the sources already eligible for Preferred Sources, which widens the gap for those who are not.

The move: this week, ask three customers or three colleagues to add your site as a Preferred Source in their Google account on queries where you expect to be cited. Fifteen minutes of instructions in an email. It is the only direct signal the user controls, and your competitors are not asking.

HubSpot adds AI spend caps and mid-contract seat swaps

On October 15, HubSpot announced account-level and feature-level credit limits, the ability to swap unused seats for usage credits mid-contract, and a choice between prepaid credit packs and pay-as-you-go billing. For accounts buying extra credit capacity, the default spending cap allows usage up to 50 percent above the monthly credit allocation, and administrators can adjust it. When the cap is hit, credit-using features pause until the next cycle or the limit is raised.

This hits any HubSpot customer on the credit model, particularly teams running AI agents or heavy automated workflows where consumption spikes are not predictable from headcount.

The move: this week, log into HubSpot as an admin, set an account-level cap that matches what you actually budgeted, and set a tighter per-feature cap on the one agent or workflow most likely to run away. Twenty minutes. If you have seats sitting unused, review the seat-to-credit swap before your next billing cycle.

Checked, and quiet

Google's UGC Fresh Data Program is open for applications, but it only applies to large forums, Q&A platforms, and social networks, so there is no move for standard brand or e-commerce operators this week. LinkedIn creator monetization, YouTube AI replies in search, and retail media spend trends all moved in minor ways that do not change what any single operator should do before next Monday.
